The first essential condition for the preservation of Psalidi was the establishment of Housing Control Zones through a Presidential Decree (1989).  More recently (1995), Psalidi together with a broader area that includes a large part of Mountain Dikaios as well as the Tigaki saltpans, have been registered (under the code number GR4210008) as a site in the list of the NATURA 2000 network, in the frame of the 92/43/EEC habitats directive.  It has also been registered as an Important Bird Area in Hellas.

Very recently, a drawn up master plan has been designed for the Psalidi peninsula, under the aegis of the Municipality of Kos, stressing out a detailed plan of land use and management as well as nature protection in particular.  This again has been passed with a new presidential decree. In the frame of this master plan, works to implement basic proposals of that plan have already been completed. Such works include the delimitation of the wetland and the construction and operation of a Visitor Center which will promote pro-environmental activities such as information and sensitization of locals and visitors to the natural values, environ-mental-friendly ways of recreation, habitat protection and wildlife management.

The management authority of this Center is the Municipality of Kos, closely cooperating on this issue with the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture as well as with the responsible regional authorities.
